Formatting A Research Paper

The following points should be kept in mind while formatting a research paper:

PAPER: you should try to use clean and good quality white paper which should measure around 8 1/2" x 11", and the printing should be done on one side only.


MARGINS: the paper should have margins of about 1" inch each from all sides. The only exception is the page number which should be placed half an inch from the top right corner.

TITLE PAGE: usually a title page is not required while writing a research paper, unless of course your teacher has asked you to include. If you decide not to include a title page, you can start your paper one inch from the top of the 1st page with your name against the left side margin. After you have written down your name, in the same format on a separate line comes the name of your teacher, followed by the course code and the date respectively. Care should be taken not to type the title completely in capital letters, not to put quotation marks on either side of the title, and finally not to underline the title of your research paper.

NUMBERING OF PAGES: the pages of your research paper should be numbered consecutively on the upper right hand corner, and aligned with the right side margin half an inch from the top.

LINE SPACING: the entire essay must be double spaced between the lines, it doesn’t matter if its handwritten or printed, all the lines should have double spacing and a one inch margin on all the sides so that the teacher can write comments.

WORDS SPACING: it is standard to leave 1 space between words, every comma, semi-colon, or colon.

INDENTATION: if you are handing over a typewritten paper, then indent about half and inch at the start of each paragraph. Quotations should be indented one inch from the left hand side margin. If you are not required to do any indenting, each paragraph should start flush to the left margin.

RIGHT JUSTIFICATION: if you use a word processor to type your essay, don’t right justify your essay and also do not format the hyphens automatically. The hyphens should be typed in you, and the entire essay should either be left justified or justified depending on what the requirement is.

USE OF BOOKS, MAGAZINES, and NEWSPAPERS: the titles of all the books, plays, novels that you have used in your research paper, should be underlined. On the other hand, titles of newspapers, journals, magazines should be put in quotation marks if they have been referred to in your research paper.

CAPITAL LETTERS: even though writing in capital letters might save time and effort for you, the entire essay should not by typed in capital letters. They should only be used for headings, start of sentences, or if there is a grammatical need to do so.

TABLE OF CONTENTS: usually a short research paper does not need a Table of Contents. However, if the research paper written by you is extremely long, it is advisable to use a table of contents which shows the page numbers where each section begins. 5. References and/or Bibliography

The references lists books or other works consulted in writing the academic term paper. It must be integrated even if endnotes or footnotes are used in the academic term paper. The understanding of the references and the information in each entry is indomitable by the chosen citation style i.e. MLA, APA, Harvard, Chicago/Turabian, and many others as mentioned in the guidelines provided by professors.

In the references part, all cited resources should be listed in alphabetical order. Inside the text of the academic term paper, afterthought should show readers from where the author found all of the cited information. These textual citations permit the reader to refer to the references part for any further information regarding the topic or theme of the academic research paper.

How To Write A Proper Term Paper

There is some confusion between a term paper and a research paper. While the titles are often interchanged, there is a difference. A research paper is always an academic research study and may take several years to complete if it is being written as part of the requirements of a degree.

The term paper is limited to the length of time a school term or semester takes and is used to determine the final grade of a particular class. Th term paper, while quite often of an academic research form, does not have to be so scholarly. A term paper may serve to prove a matter of opinion or an attempt at proving an hypothesis.



The requirements for writing a term paper are very similar to those of a research paper. One difference is that the topic of a term paper is often assigned to the student or they are given only a limited number of choices for their subject. Term paper writing is not as extensive as research papers. With less time for completion, the term paper will generally be a shorter work. However, your term paper still requires the same attention to detail and maintaining of source material and referencing techniques as the more scholarly research paper.

Begin your term paper writing with study. Once you have your topic it is recommended you first find out about the basic principles underlying your subject. This will help give you a general idea of what your topic is about and can provide ideas for how to direct your own term paper. Remember to keep notes and reference lists. A general encyclopedia is good for your initial research. From there you will be able to focus on writings from people mentioned and access the bibliography section to find more source materials you can utilize.

Internet resources are also handy for finding out about your topic. Do not stop at just one, however, as there is probably more misinformation online than not. Compare several sources to determine which seem most genuine.

Once you have begun the process of physically writing your term paper, start with a general outline detailing what information you are presenting and figure out the order in which you present each new section of information. Stick to proper grammar and writing patterns. Avoid colloquialisms except in necessary instances where they may apply. Prevent yourself from emotional diatribes. Your term paper should explain the topic, not try to argue it.

How To Write Better College Essays And Termpapers

Anyone can write a college essay or term paper, but not everyone can do it correctly. Even the best students can find themselves paralyzed by writer’s block or unaware that their essay or term paper is too difficult to read or follow. My eight tips will jumpstart your essay writing process.


1. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Leave yourself plenty of time to write, edit and rewrite. Plan to complete your essay one day, or one week, whichever is fits your schedule, in advance; then you can run it through a spelling and grammar checker - and ask someone else to read it. You term paper or essay may look and sound perfect to you, but will other readers agree?

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOPIC

Choosing the right topic or approach to an assigned topic counts for a lot. Find something you know well and love. Be sure you understand the assignment; if not, ask questions until you are sure you do.

3. MAKE YOUR WRITING UNIQUE

Make your writing unique. Let your “why” shine through. Communicate why you chose to write about this topic; why you love this topic; and why your topic is important - not in so many words, but put your passion into your writing.

4. WRITE FOR A DIVERSE AUDIENCE

Write for the widest audience. If you are writing to your professor because he requires you to do so, then your writing style will show it. Imagine a real-world audience, one that wants to hear what you have to say, and write for them. Your audience might include employees reading a training manual, a foundation’s Board of Directors reading a grant proposal, newspaper or journal subscribers, and so on. This will give your writing purpose, focus and clarity.

5. USE RESEARCH TO AID YOUR WRITING

Learn how to find and use popular academic search engines such as the Academic Index, Ebsco Host, Virtual LLC, or the Wilson Web. Ask your college librarian to assist you.

6. ALWAYS PLAN

Plan what you are going to write before you type the first word. Say it as briefly and clearly as you can. Figure out and outline the purpose of your paper, and decide how you plan to substantiate your claims. Then flesh it out. Writing more words isn’t necessarily better, so write what you think is necessary to get your points across.

7. PAPER AESTHETICS

Break your paper into reasonable-length pieces. Keep your paragraphs short. Use subheadings.

8. DON’T COPY FROM OTHER PAPERS

Don’t plagiarize; when in doubt, cite your source. Ask your professor if he prefers a certain citation method. Otherwise, use in-text citations if your essay is relatively short; use footnotes in longer papers.

If you are using the Internet, know your sources well. The Internet breeds a lot of rumor, opinion and plagiarism. If you are writing your own ideas or what is common knowledge, then you don’t need to cite, but you do if you are paraphrasing.

Read sample essays and papers to understand the concepts of theme, approach and writing style, but don’t copy an entire essay and submit it as your own, as this is plagiarism. Not only will you deprive yourself of learning necessary writing skills, but also most professors know how to check for plagiarizers. It’s never worth the risk.
